How to Use the Glisson Loop for Exercise

The Glisson loop trainer is used both for prevention and for therapeutic purposes in spinal conditions, primarily targeting the cervical and thoracic regions. However, it’s important to remember that the spine is a highly sensitive structure that requires maximum care. Even in clinical traction of the neck and upper back, professionals begin with a load of 3–5 kg and gradually increase it to 15–20 kg only by the fifth session. The cervical spine is especially vulnerable—careless movements can lead to serious injury.

When You Should Not Use the Glisson Loop

Exercises with the Glisson loop are not recommended in the following cases:

  • ligament tears in any part of the spine;

  • significant spinal deformities;

  • congenital spinal defects;

  • acute inflammation in the bones, cartilage, or muscles of the spine;

  • disc herniation with sequestration or rupture of the fibrous ring, with leakage of the nucleus pulposus into the spinal canal;

  • degenerative spinal conditions (such as osteochondrosis, spondylosis, or arthrosis);

  • segmental instability, where the vertebrae become excessively mobile and may damage the spinal cord or nerve roots.

Why Use the Glisson Loop?

The main purpose of the Glisson loop is to relax the spinal muscles, especially in cases of chronic tension that can impair blood circulation and the nourishment of intervertebral discs. Prolonged muscle tightness may lead to compression of nerve roots and pain. Using the loop helps restore blood flow to the neck and head and increases the space between vertebrae, supporting the prevention of degenerative spine conditions.

How to Use the Glisson Loop Safely

There are different types of Glisson loop designs, with or without added weights. The load should always be increased gradually and reduced just as smoothly. For home use, it is recommended to start with a weight of up to 2 kg and follow a consistent, structured routine.

How to Prepare Before Using the Glisson Loop

Before starting exercises with the Glisson loop, it is recommended to warm up the neck and upper back muscles. Perform a light massage of the longitudinal back muscles, followed by deeper circular motions and relaxing vibrations, or use gentle heat therapy to loosen the muscles.

How to Perform Exercises with the Glisson Loop

  • Lower your chin down and hold for 3–4 seconds.

  • Make slow turns to the right and left, as if saying “no.” Repeat 3 times.

  • Tilt your head toward your right shoulder, hold for 3–4 seconds, then repeat on the left side.

  • Move your chin in a semicircle from one shoulder to the other, then reverse the direction.

  • Turn your head to the right, trying to look at your shoulder blade, then repeat on the left.

  • Raise and lower your chin with your head tilted at a 45° angle.

  • Press the back of your head gently against a wall to create light resistance.

After completing the exercises, remove the loop and wear a cervical support collar to help maintain the achieved spinal position. Mild dizziness after traction is normal and may occur due to increased oxygen flow to the brain. It is best to sit or lie down for a while and avoid sudden movements.

Why Choose the Super Glisson Loop – Maximum Comfort
